    About English Department

At a time when the spell of the Western system of education was at its strongest in India and the educated people were discarding the ideals and value of their own ancient heritage, Mahatma Munshi Ram, who later achieved immortality as Swami Shraddhanand, decided to receive and reintroduce the Vedic Gurukul system of education into the country. Being a man of courage and conviction, Mahatmaji established his Gurukula in 1901. Appreciating the zeal with which this institution had preserved Vedic culture and values, the Govt. of India endowed it with the status of a deemed to be university in 1962.

Immediately after the inception of this institution 1901, one of the earliest subjects which were taught there, was English. Similarly after having the status of a deemed to be university in1963, one of the departments that came into existence, was English Department

The then Vice-Chancellor initially conceived it as a Department of English having Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. However, by 1983, with the encouragement of the then Vice-Chancellor Late Shri G B K Hooja, (I.A.S.) Research Programme was started in the Department. Initially the Department was looked after by Dr Ganga Ram Garg before Shri S. S. Bhagat was appointed as Reader and the Head of the Department in 1963. Very soon another vetron Dr Narayan Sharma also joined the Department. Without much time lag Dr. R L Varshney and Dr A N Dwivedi also joined the Department. Relatively young talented teachers Dr Ajai Sharma, Dr Shrawan K Sharma and Dr.Ambuj Kumar Sharma strengthened the Department in due course. Later Dr Krishnavatar Agrawal and Dr Mukesh Ranjan Verma also joined the Department. The Department also had the services of Prof. Naresh Chandra, Dr Pabhu Narayan, Dr S K Banerjee, Dr. Suman Kumar and Dr Pramathesh Bhattacharya.

Prof Naresh Chandra opted for Lucknow University, Dr Prabhu Narayan opted for Gorakhpur, Dr Banerjee for Indian Police Services, Prof. Suman Kumar Kashi vidyapeeth, Varanasi, Prof. A N Dwivedi for Allahabad University, and Dr Ajai Sharma for C C S University, Meerut. Prof. R L Varshney, Dr Ganga Ram Garg and Prof. S S Bhagat live only in our memory

In these efforts apart from the resourcefulness and services of the regular faculty, the Department has been ably served and tangibly assisted by eminent and gifted veteran guest faculty like the Late Prof. T R Sharma, Late Prof. R S Singh, Late Prof. Thakur Prasad, Dr M G Vassanjee, Prof. John Kerscell, Dr Chandra Mohan, Dr M N Sharma and Prof A P Trivedi and a host of others.

The Department could also be proud of having edited The Vedic Path , a Quarterly English Journal of Gurukul Kangri University.
