 The Department of Zoology was established in 1961 with undergraduate
 level teaching. Post graduate classes in Microbiology were started in
 1984 with the recommendation of U.G.C. visiting committee during five
 year plan under the headship of Prof. B.D. Joshi. On account of
 persistent efforts of Prof. B.D. Joshi M.Sc. Environmental Science
 classes were started in 1995.
 
 About 219 dissertations have so far been submitted by the M.Sc.
 students of the department.
 
 Research Projects
 Department is very active in research area. The members of the
 Department have run 15 projects sanctioned by various funding agencies
 viz. World Bank, M/O Env. and Forests, DST, UGC, ICFRE and GBPIHED.
 Work on some projects is going on. The Department has recently
 received a special grant of Rupees twenty lakhs from the Department of
 Science and Technology under the FIST program to strengthen
 teaching, research, instrumentation and other infrastructural facilities.
 
 Journal and Books
 The teachers of the departments with their own resources and
 managements are publishing regularly a journal entitled.
 
 Himalayan Journal of Environment and Zoology since 1987. Similarly, 
 15 books have so far been written and or edited by the teachers of this
 department.
 
 Seminars and Symposia
 This Department has organised12 national level seminars during last 15
 years on different aspects of Zoology, Bio-diversity, Biotechnology and
 Environment. The faculty has participated more than 200 national and
 International seminars/ conferences and delivered invited talks,
 presented their research findings and have brought honor to the
 department. Some of the faculty members have visited abroad to
 present their research work and also for some collaborative work with
 other Universities abroad.
 
 The members of the departments established an Educational Academy
 named as "Indian Academy of Environmental Sciences" in 1986. The
 academy organizes vaccination and health camps, tree plantation,
 environmental awareness campaigns, essay and painting competition
 etc. from time to time in the district of Haridwar.
